Naginata is a traditional Japanese Martial Art performed with a long wooden stick. Practice is designed to improve physical strength and balance of movement.
Practice includes both Engi - in which kata (choreographed practice) are judged according to attitude and accuracy of movement, and Shiai (full-contact sparring with flexible weapons and armour) where matches are decided by valid strikes against an opponent.
Naginata requires regular, focused practice and teaches patience, discipline, grace, co-operation, self-control, self-confidence, and respect for self and others. In addition, learning the art’s etiquette is an important part of Naginata practice.
